Communication Social Group!

We are happy to be starting our monthly communication groups as part of our Rett Syndrome and Related Disorders Communication Program.  The goal of these groups is to give children and teens the opportunity to communicate with others who are also using AAC systems, practicing language and social communication, within fun cooperative activities.  These groups will take place on the following Saturdays, with the following themes:

Sunday November 17th

Saturday December 7th

Who facilitates?

Groups will be run by 1-2 speech therapists who have extensive experience working with children and adolescents with Rett Syndrome and FoxG1.  We will group children based on age. Groups activities will include greetings, show and tell/news sharing, a cooperative activity that may be art, cooking or play, shared reading, writing and/or music.  We are aware that not all children eat by mouth. The goal of cooking activities is not to eat the food, but rather to engage in the process. There is a lot of language and cooperative interactions that go into cooking activities.  When the activity is over, children will have the opportunity to explore the product in a way that is best for them. Touch, taste, smell and see are all modalities that can be used when exploring cooking activities. We will also have a blender for those who can taste the food to their lips, but cannot ingest it.  These will not take place every group, but may occasionally be part of the group.
